Towards future technologies

The National Research Programme 'Towards future technologies' is designed to create the preconditions for the development of future technologies and to enhance the potential of Lithuanian studies and research institutions and prepare them for participation in the research and technologies programmes implemented by the European Space Agency (ESA).

Lithuania started its integration into ESA activities by adopting the 2010-2015 Programme and signing an Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Lithuania and the European Space Agency concerning cooperation in matters regarding space for peaceful purposes. The next step was the development of the Lithuanian Innovation Development Programme for 2014–2020, which emphasises the importance of the development of space and related areas for the development of the country. It is expected that by implementing Lithuanian space policies Lithuanian space sector will successfully integrate itself in to ESA activities and become competitive on an international level, allowing adaptation of space technologies in other sectors as well as opening opportunities to develop space researchers potential, while knowledge about space and products and services based on space technologies will be beneficial for education and well-being of the country and its citizens. 

The purpose of the Programme is to create a favourable international context and the conditions for research to build up a basis for developing future technologies, promoting innovations and enhancing Lithuania's competitiveness and security by developing the fundamental and applied research necessary for the integration into the research and technology development programmes of the ESA.

The purpose of the National Research Programme Towards Future Technologies is the preparedness of Lithuania for its membership in the ESA, i.e. to ensure that following Lithuania's becoming a full member of the ESA, Lithuanian researchers could compete on equal terms with the researchers of the ESA Member States:

1) by implementing the ESA research and development programmes:

  • research programmes: Euclid, PLATO, Solar Orbiter, James Webb Space Telescope, JUICE, ATHENA and other scientific space mission programmes approved during the implementation of the Programme;
  • European Life and Physical Science in Space Programme ELIPS or analogous programmes approved during the implementation of the Programme;

2) by carrying out research and development activities intended for the development of the application of space technologies and services for the public and private sectors, and the citizens, by implementing the programmes of the ESA prepared together with the EU:

  • satellite navigation programme Galileo;
  • Earth observation programme Copernicus;
  • programmes for integrated applications of space technologies and related areas.

The wide reach of the science and technology programmes enables participation of nearly all high-level Lithuanian scientists, who would wish to orient their research towards ESA themes.

To acquire special scientific competences and skills required for the participation in the ESA scientific space mission programmes and ensuring the scientific support to the development of the application of space technologies and services  To acquire specialised research competences and skills required in relation to joining the ESA space infrastructure development technological programmes, and developing the research intended to develop the electromagnetic radiation generation, transmission and recording methods
