prof. dr. Laimas Virginijus Jonaitis

Member at the Committee of Natural and Technical Sciences of the Research Council of Lithuanian since 2021. 

He is a doctor of medical sciences, professor of the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LSMU), head of the General Gastroenterology Sector of the Clinic of Gastroenterology of Kaunas Clinics of LSMU.

In 1992, he graduated from Kaunas Medical Academy (now LSMU) with a degree in medicine; in 1995, graduated from residency studies of a doctor internist; in 1997, graduated residency studies in gastroenterology, acquired the qualification of a gastroenterologist and started working as a gastroenterologist in the Department of Gastroenterology of Kaunas Clinics of LSMU Hospital.

In 2000, he graduated from doctoral studies and defended his doctoral dissertation (supervisor - prof. Limas Kupčinskas). In 2005, he obtained the title of associate professor. In 2008, the habilitation procedure was performed and defended. In 2014, he obtained the title of professor. Since 2011, he has been working as a researcher at the LSMU Institute for Digestive Research, supervised 1 international and 2 national research projects, and participated in 5 national research projects as a researcher.

Scientific interests: fundamental and clinical research of diseases related to Helicobacter pylori infection (chronic gastritis, ulcers, gastric cancer), clinical research of gastroesophageal reflux disease, fundamental and clinical research of inflammatory bowel diseases, research of functional gastrointestinal tract pathology, viral gastrointestinal pathology.

He is a researcher and/or principal researcher of more than 40 international biomedical clinical trials. He received training at Kolding Hospital (Denmark), Huddinge University Hospital in Stockholm (Sweden), Copenhagen University Hospital Hvidovre (Denmark), University of Magdeburg (Germany).

He has published about 200 scientific publications, 80 of which are in publications that can be referenced and have a citation index Web of Science (h-index - 23).

Chairman of the Treatment Council of LSMUL Kaunas Clinics, member of the Supervisory Board of LSMUL Kaunas Clinics, coordinator of the LSMUL Gastroenterology Residency Program Development Group and Residency Execution Coordinator, member of the Lithuanian Society of Gastroenterologists, member of the World Gastroenterologists Organisation. He is a member of the European Crohn’s and Colitis Organisation (ECCO). He is a reviewer and member of editorial boards of several international scientific journals; since 2012, an expert of the Research Council of Lithuania. 

In 2001, he was awarded the European Diploma for Gastroenterology.
