Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Vilnius University Professor Emeritus.
In 1974, he graduated with honors from Vilnius University. He defended his Doctor of Science (candidate) thesis in 1979, and his habilitation doctor’s thesis in 1995. He worked at Vilnius University (VU) as a Senior Lecturer (1983), Associate Professor (since 1988), Head of Department (1991–1996), Professor (since 1996). From 2022 – Professor Emeritus. He was the Chairman of the Lithuanian Science Council (2003–2013), the Vice President of the European Science Foundation (2012–2013), the Vice Rector for Scientific Affairs at Vilnius University (2013–2015), Chairman of the Board of the Life Sciences Center (LSC) (since 2015), Head of the LSC (2016–2017), Advisor to the Minister of Education and Science (2017-2018).
In 2014, he became the laureate of the Lithuanian Science Prize. He published over 100 scientific articles in international (“Clarivate Analytics Web of Science”) scientific journals. He supervised 10 defended doctoral dissertations.
At the Prague Higher School of Chemical Technology in Czechoslovakia, he did a postdoctoral internship (1980–1981), and was a visiting researcher (2001). He did research work at Lund University (Sweden) (1992, 1993, 1996, 1999 and 2000). Under the TEMPUS program, he did an internship at the Vrije University of Brussels in Belgium (1994). He worked as a researcher in the USA under the International Initiatives Program of the American Chemical Society (1998). Coordinator of the 7th Framework Program project SPREE, group leader of two projects funded by Nordforsk of the Nordic Council (2012–2015). Member of the organizing committee of international scientific conferences “Balticum Organicum Syntheticum” (BOS) (2000–2022).
Expert of the European Commission (EC), Latvian Science Council and Academic Center, Estonian Science Council, Polish National Science Center. Member of the working groups of EC High-level experts for the “7BPEx-post” evaluation (2014–2015) and the interim evaluation of the Euratom program (2016–2017). Member (2011–2013) and Chairman (2013–2014) of the Steering Committee of the BONUS Program. Representative of Lithuania in the “Ideas” committee of the European Union FP7 (2006-2012), in the “Horizon 2020” European Research Council (ERC) committee (2015–2018), in the ERC committee of “European Horizon” (from 2021).
Butkus is a full member of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, a member of the Lithuanian Radio and Television Council (2014–2017).
In 2013, by the decree of the President of the Republic of Lithuania, he was awarded with a commemorative sign for his personal contribution to the Lithuanian presidency of the Council of the European Union. Acknowledgement from the Minister of Foreign Affairs in 2018 for the initiative and successful work for Lithuania’s entry into the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
