dr. Arvydas Lubys

The Senior Director and Inventor of the Scientific Research and Experimental Development Center of UAB “Thermo Fisher Scientific Baltics”.
In 1986, he graduated with honors from the Genetics program of Vilnius State University. In 1997, he defended his doctoral thesis ab externo. In 1995, he became the laureate of the competition of young scientists of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, in 1998 – the laureate of the competition of young Lithuanian scientists.
From 1986 to 2004, he worked as a researcher at the Institute of Biotechnology, since 1994 he was the Head of the Prokaryotic Gene Engineering Laboratory. In 2003, he started working at the biotechnology company UAB “Fermentas”, which was acquired by “Thermo Fisher Scientific” in 2010. In the company, he held the position of Deputy Director for Science (2003-2011), R&D Director of Molecular Biology Business (2011–2014). Since 2014, he has been the Senior R&D Director of the Molecular Biology Business, leading a team of 220 scientists at “Thermo Fisher Scientific Baltics”. Previously led a group of 6 scientists in Carlsbad, USA (2016–2019) and a group of 25 scientists in Regensburg, Germany (2020–2022).
Since 2004, he has been actively involved in pedagogical activities, he was a Lecturer, Associate Professor (2007–2012), Professor (2012–2021) at the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Vilnius University (VU). In 2017–2021, the Member of the Council of the VU Life Sciences Center.
He has published 35 scientific articles with co-authors, 12 of which were published in the last 10 years. A. Lubys is an inventor who has rights to 5 patents and has submitted 4 more patent applications, based on these inventions 9 international patent families have been formed.
Lubys is the scientific supervisor of 4 successfully defended doctoral theses. From 2005 to 2009, under the leadership of “Fermento” Research Center, together with international partners, he won and managed 3 projects of the sixth joint FW6 program. In 2009–2012, he won the support of the European Union (EU) structural funds for an infrastructural project, after the implementation of which the R&D infrastructure of “Thermo Fisher Scientific Baltics” was updated and the Research and Experimental Development Center of 3000 m2 was built. From 2006 to 2015, he won and managed 5 EU Structural Funds projects.
