Seventh Framework Programme

In order for Europe and the rest of the world to tackle various complex issues and satisfy the needs of future society a large amount of resources is needed in addition to a creative development of synergies between scientific research and technology innovation. For this reason European Union promotes international and interdisciplinary projects, intended to create a conductive environment for unification of researchers’ efforts across the member States in order to ensure high quality of results in all areas of science and innovation.

7th Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7) is the main measure to achieve these goals. In effect from year 2007 until 2013 the programme has a total budget of over € 53 billion acting as a key tool to respond to Europe's needs in terms of jobs and competitiveness, and to maintain leadership in the global knowledge economy.

This money will (for the most part) be spent on grants to research actors all over Europe and beyond, in order to co-finance research, technological development and demonstration projects. Grants are determined on the basis of calls for proposals and a peer review process, which are highly competitive.

The FP7 consists of 4 specific programmes briefly outlined in the following sections.
