The Science Council of Lithuania of the seventh term started work in May 2008.

The Science Council is transforming into the respective Research Council. The Science Council of Lithuania contributes to the science policy formation and is involved in legislative issues of the Lithuanian science and studies system.

The Council is made of the Board of the Council and two committees: the Committee of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Committee of Natural and Technical Sciences. There are 9 Board members and 10 members in each Committee and the chairs of the Committees.

The goals and objectives of this Council were laid out in the amendment (December 2007) of the article 11 of the Law on Science and Studies of the Republic of Lithuania as well as in the Regulations of the Science Council of Lithuania.

The main aims of the Council are to seek that the research system would efficiently contribute to the developments of national economy, international co-operation, higher education, and social development. Major attention is paid to the development of a science-oriented society in the context of globalisation and international integration, which is capable of effectively competing in the modern technology, services and product markets, as well as to be aware of and to preserve its national identity. Although there are many well-known and internationally recognised research groups of Lithuanian scientists successfully participating in the scientific projects of the European Union, NATO, and other international organisations, the aim is to strengthen their competitiveness. The Research Council of Lithuania through administration of programmes funded by the EU structural funds for the period of 2007-2013 is administrating top level researchers (global grants program), those working abroad, and increasing the role of the Lithuanian research system in all areas of countries life. National science programmes are designed to concentrate resources to achieve progress in advances research areas.
